The Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway

Project type

Education

Location

Berkeley, California

Designed by

Weiss Manfredi

The Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway at UC Berkeley presents a compelling interplay of scale, transparency, and geometric precision. Externally, the expansive glass panel system functions as a dynamic canvas, catching shifting natural light and reflecting the surrounding campus greenery while maintaining a crisp, rhythmic façade structure. Transitioning inside, the soaring multi-story interior space dramatically opens up, where high-performance glass walls maximize daylight penetration and eliminate visual boundaries. This seamless continuity between exterior glazing and the vast atrium offers ideal views into deep spatial layers, structural symmetry, and the fluid blur between interior volume and the external landscape.
